Dakar., Senegal’s navy announced Monday that it discovered 30 bodies in a drifting boat that was towed ashore Sunday off the coast of Dakar, the country’s capital.
“So far, 30 bodies have been recorded. Ongoing investigations by the relevant authorities will provide more precise information on the final number of victims and the exact origin of the vessel, which will be communicated later,” the Navy said in a statement. .
“Recovery, identification and transfer operations are very difficult due to the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies,” adds the statement, which explains that a Navy patrol boat was sent to tow the vessel to the port of Dakar after a alert received Sunday night.
The bodies found on the boat are believed to be migrants attempting to leave the country illegally, a practice that has increased considerably in Senegal and claims the lives of hundreds of people each year.
Earlier this month, another boat carrying migrants capsized off the coastal town of Mbour in western Senegal, leaving around 30 people dead and several missing.
