On Wednesday, the LOK Executive Committee meeting approved the composition of the Latvian Olympic team “Tokyo 2020” for the start of the 32nd Summer Olympic Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 8 this year in the capital of Japan, Tokyo.
Currently, the Latvian team in Tokyo has approved 30 athletes in 14 sports: 3×3 basketball, wrestling, judo, equestrian, karate, modern pentathlon, swimming, beach volleyball, cycling (highway and BMX), kayaking, weightlifting, shooting, tennis and athletics.
On July 1, according to the official decision of the World Athletics Association, five more athletes could join the Latvian team. According to unofficial information, they could be – javelin throwers Madara Palameika, Anete Kociņa and Rolands Štrobinders, middle distance runner Līga Velvere and sprinter Gunta Vaičule. Along with 30 athletes, the approved delegation list also includes 33 coaches, three sports doctors and four physiotherapists, while the team management and support staff travel to Tokyo with seven people.
In connection with the restrictions set by the organizers of the Olympic Games, the Latvian Olympic team “Tokyo 2020” must follow a certain Covid-19 protocol. It stipulates that each member of the Latvian Olympic team must perform a Covid-19 test 96 and 72 hours before departure, which is repeated at Tokyo Airport after arrival.
Also, while in Tokyo, participants must take express tests every day and take notes on their well-being every day in a special application. The Latvian team responsible for compliance with the protocol is Covid-19 official, LOV doctor Jānis Kaupe.
Currently, 67% of the Latvian Olympic delegation have completed the full vaccination process, 23% are in the vaccination process, while 10% do not plan to be vaccinated.
On Monday, July 5, at 12 o’clock in the Esplanade Park near the monument to Oskars Kalpaks in front of the Latvian Olympic Committee will be a solemn presentation of the Latvian Olympic team “Tokyo 2020”, with the participation of the President of Latvia and the Minister of Education and Science composition, the name of the flag bearer, as well as the cohesive activity of the Latvian Olympic team “Tokyo 2020” – Strength Picnic – joint preparation and enjoyment of invigorating lunch.
The event will take place in accordance with the restrictions currently set in the country (Cabinet Regulation No. 360), which provide for its participants and guests to present a valid digital certificate confirming vaccination against Covid-19 or virus disease, or negative Covid-19 test performed within the last 48 hours .
