3 US Tourists Die at Sandals Emerald Bay Hotel – NBC 7 Houston

Bahamas.- Three American tourists died at a resort in the Bahamas after becoming ill, confirmed authorities of the Atlantic island country, and one more was transferred to a hospital for treatment.

Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper issued a statement last Friday saying police are investigating and the cause of death is unknown, but “no crime is suspected.”

At the moment the identities of the deceased tourists have not been publicly revealed.

Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville told Eyewitness News Bahamas on Saturday that some hotel guests went to a clinic Thursday with nausea and vomiting, received treatment and left. Later, three of them were found dead. A fourth person was airlifted to a New Providence hospital.

He indicated that environmental health specialists, doctors and others were investigating the situation to make sure that it was not a danger to public health.

“We consider that what we are seeing is an isolated case that is associated in a specific area,” he said, adding that researchers are doing blood and toxicology tests to help determine the cause of the disease.

Cooper was standing in for Prime Minister Philip E. Davis, who was out of the country.

The communications chief for the prime minister’s office, Latrae L. Rahming, wrote on Twitter that the deaths occurred at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort on Exuma.

In a statement to People magazine, a representative for Sandals Emerald Bay confirmed the deaths, saying the company was “actively working to support both the investigation and the families of the guests in any way possible.”

The hotel company did not immediately respond to a query from The Associated Press on Saturday.
