3 Things That Are Suspected to Be the Cause of Paracetamol Contamination in the Jakarta Sea

Jakarta

Education by a number of academics at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) found contamination paracetamol Jakarta waters. The concentration of contamination found was also quite high.

One of the researchers involved in the study, Zainal Arifin, said the research, published in the journal Science Direct, is an early finding that still needs further investigation. However, he explained the possible cause of paracetamol contamination in the Jakarta sea.

“There are three possibilities. First, excessive consumption by people in Jabodetabek,” he said when contacted detik.com, Saturday (2/10/2021).

“That (paracetamol), the rest will be wasted through our urine or feces into the septic tank, the waste system is not good,” he continued.

There are two areas with high levels of paracetamol contamination, namely Ancol and Angke. There is content paracetamol amounted to 420 nanograms per liter in Ancol, while in Angke, the content of paracetamol even reached 610 nanograms per liter.

In addition, he also mentioned waste from hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. Possibly, the waste management of the two industries is not functioning optimally, thus polluting the surrounding environment.

“So the remnants of the drug enter the river and then to the beach,” he explained.

This study is the first study to analyze the description of sea water quality with chemical contamination in Indonesian coastal waters. The results of the study show that the parameters also exceed the limits of the Indonesian Seawater Quality Standard.
