Indonesia Under 20 national team will play the decisive match against Vietnam a 2023 Asian Cup U-20 qualification, Sunday (18/9). Here is the scenario for Indonesia to qualify for the U-20 Asian Cup.
The Indonesian national team just won their second Group F win after beating Hong Kong 5-1 at Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT), Surabaya, on Friday (16/9).
The result brings Shin Tae Yong’s team to the top of the table. The Indonesian Under-20 national team overtook Vietnam despite having the same points and goal difference due to fewer yellow cards.

The U-20s and Vietnam both have six points and a goal difference of 9-1. This happened thanks to the same results of the two teams who won 4-0 over East Timor and beat Hong Kong 5-1.
With the current situation, the Indonesian Under-20 team must win over Vietnam to qualify for the 2023 Under-20 Asian Cup finals.
If the goal can be achieved, Garuda Nusantara will directly qualify as group winner. Another three points will allow Hokky Caraka and his friends to score perfect points, or nine points in three games.
The certainty of the qualification of the Indonesian Under-20 national team to the 2023 Under-20 Asian Cup will be more complicated if the clash between Indonesia and Vietnam in the final match ends in a draw. According to the AFC competition rules, the head-to-head between the two teams will be decisive.
If the score is a draw, Indonesia and Vietnam have the same points and goal difference. Referring to the tiebreaker in the head-to-head rules, the number of goals scored by penalty kicks will be decisive.
If the number of goals from the spot is still a draw, the difference is the discipline points calculated by the number of yellow cards. The Indonesian Under-20 national team is in a better position so far as they have only collected two yellow cards compared to three yellow cards posted by Vietnam.
If the discipline points remain the same, they will enter the final tiebreak, which is a draw by the committee.
Therefore, the Indonesian Under-20 national team must ensure that they do not receive additional cards in the match against Vietnam if the final score remains in a draw.
Another scenario that allows the Indonesian Under 20 national team to go to the best runner-up. As is well known, there are five best runners-up to accompany the 15 winners of the 2023 Asian Cup U-20 qualifying rounds.
However, the choice of qualifying from the best runner-up path will be more complicated as they compete with 10 teams that occupy second place in other groups.
Referring to the provisional ranking of the best runner-up in the 2023 Asian Cup U-20 qualification, Vietnam occupies the first position. The Golden Stars are followed by China, Malaysia, Yemen and Bahrain in the top five.
