3 New Countries Report First Cases of Monkeypox, There’s the United Arab Emirates

Jakarta

There are three new countries that recorded the first cases of monkeypox. Are the United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic and Slovenia. The three reported the first case of monkeypox as of Tuesday (24/5/2022).

The report adds to the list of 18 countries that first reported the monkeypox virus, which previously only spread in west and central Africa. Experts expect more cases to be reported, but the risk of fatality remains low.

Quoted from BBCIn general, monkeypox symptoms are generally mild, such as fever and rash. Meanwhile, the UAE recorded cases from travelers who recently visited West Africa and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Local authorities said they were fully prepared to deal with any outbreak, the UAE government also confirmed that it had prepared initial surveillance protocols to detect the disease. The UAE’s optimism is in line with the message of the World Health Organization (WHO) which reassures the public not to panic.

This is because according to WHO the virus can be overcome with the right response.

“We encourage all of you to step up surveillance of monkeypox cases, see where the transmission rate is and understand where it’s going,” WHO director for Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness, Sylvie Briand, told a conference on Tuesday.

“The outbreak may be abnormal but it can be controlled,” he added.

The BBC noted that the total cases outside Africa have now reached 237 patients, both confirmed and suspected cases. Many countries have taken various measures to prevent the spread, including ordering the monkeypox vaccine.

Germany recently said it had ordered 40,000 doses of the Imvanex vaccine, which is used to treat smallpox, but is also effective against monkeypox. The vaccine is prepared in case the outbreak worsens.

“Anyone who was vaccinated with the smallpox vaccine many years ago as part of the global effort to eradicate the disease should have existing immunity,” the German health official said.
