3 Israeli anti-missile systems including Iron Dome shot down by Iranian missiles

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Missile defense system Israel especially Iron Dome again real test when Iran they launched more than 200 ballistic and hypersonic missiles on Tuesday afternoon (1/10).

Until now, the Iron Dome anti-missile system has been the main point and pride of Israel’s air defense. This defense system created by the US is said to be the most sophisticated and is up to 90 percent effective in repelling missiles.

However, the Iron Dome was under the spotlight after it was reportedly hit by an Iranian missile on Tuesday night.

Several parties and witnesses on social media said that the Iron Dome was not active when Iran hit Israel with its missiles.

This is because several Iranian missiles appeared to have fallen in several areas of Israel, destroying several buildings, starting fires, and even damaging the base of the most advanced fighter jets at Tel Aviv.

Israel apparently has an anti-missile defense system in addition to Iron Dome. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is implementing a multi-layered anti-missile defense system.

With this technique, each Israeli anti-missile system works according to the size and duration of the threat.

So, what anti-missile systems does Israel have?

1. Iron Dome

Iron Dome is an anti-missile system created by Israel and the US and developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

This system began to be used by Israel in 2011 and is considered one of the most effective air defense systems in the world.

Israel currently has 10 Iron Domes installed at various locations in the country.

Each device has three to four launchers. Each launcher can accommodate up to 20 missile launchers

To save spies, the radar system will be able to detect if a rocket is on a path that could hit a populated area. Otherwise, the missile will be allowed to land without resistance.

In addition, it turns out that the Iron Dome is not intended to repel long-range ballistic missiles, let alone hypersonic missiles.

Named The Wall Street Journal, Iron Dome’s main task is to repel short-range air attacks and intercept rockets and drones at a distance of about 69 kilometers.

2. David’s Sling

David’s Sling is a home-made anti-missile system that has been used by Israel’s air defense for a long time.

David’s Sling works to shoot down medium to long range ballistic missiles.

Named ABC NewsDavid’s Sling is designed to target medium and long range missiles with a range of 40 kilometers to 300 kilometers.

David’s Sling is made by Raytheon and Rafael, the Israeli defense contractor who also makes Iron Dome with the US.

David’s Sling consists of a two-stage missile that does not have a warhead. This system destroys incoming ballistic missiles with the force of an impact, a so-called “hit-to-kill” system that is similar to shooting a bullet with another bullet due to its high velocity. e.

3. Family Arrow

The Arrow anti-missile system is part of Israel’s linear defense architecture designed specifically to intercept ballistic missiles.

This system was developed together with the United States since 1986 between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Boeing.

Report cited Defense of BoeingArrow became one of the world’s first active missile defense systems capable of intercepting long-range ballistic missiles.

The Arrow system is part of Israel’s defense against high-level and long-range threats, such as those posed by ballistic missiles that often travel at very high speeds and can carry warheads or -conventional behavior (eg, nuclear or chemical).

Arrow 2

Arrow 2 is part of Israel’s Arrow “family” of anti-missile systems also known as Hetz.

Arrow 2 is designed to intercept medium to long range ballistic missiles during the intermediate flight phase (atmospheric trajectory).

The system is expected to be able to intercept targets at a range of up to 1,000 km (620 miles) and will be able to intercept enemy missiles before they reach Israeli territory.

Arrow 2 uses a warhead with a short-range fuse. Unlike Arrow 3, Arrow 2 does not require direct contact, but instead explodes near the target to destroy or disable incoming missiles.

The system began operating in 2000, with further improvements since then.

According to the US Missile Defense Agency documents regarding the US-Israel missile defense project, Arrow 2’s capabilities are similar to the US military’s THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) air defense system.

Arrow 2 is capable of handling long-range missiles such as Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) that are likely to travel at altitudes outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

Arrow 3

Arrow 3 is an even more advanced missile interceptor than Arrow 2. It is designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles, especially those traveling through outer space (outer Earth’s atmosphere).

The system targets incoming missiles in the exosphere (outer space), in the early stages of descent.

Named Reutersthe Arrow 3 is estimated to have a range of up to 2,414 km (1,500 miles) with an altitude of up to 161 kilometers.

Unlike Arrow 2, Arrow 3 works with tactics “hit-to-kill”meaning the system destroys incoming ballistic missiles through direct impact. This method is very effective because the system physically collides with the missile, neutralizing it without the need for a warhead.

Arrow 3 can engage targets at altitudes of up to 100 km (62 miles), beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. It provides protection against Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) and other long-range threats.

First deployed in 2017, the Arrow 3 system is currently Israel’s most advanced missile defense system.

During the April 2024 Iranian missile and drone attacks, Arrow 2 and 3 worked together with other Israeli defense systems, achieving a 99% interception rate for more than 300 ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles.
