3 gunshot wounds in NBA champions celebrations

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Two shootings in downtown Milwaukee during the massive celebrations of the NBA championship won by the Milwaukee Bucks early Wednesday morning left three people injured, police said.

The shooting occurred around 12:42 a.m. at two locations near Water Street, police said in a statement. A WISN television reporter was broadcasting from the scene when several shots were heard and people began to flee.

The events took place across the Milwaukee River from the Fiserv Forum stadium, where the game was played, and the Deer District plaza, where some 65,000 people had gathered for an outdoor party. The main artery in the area is a street of bars and restaurants.

During Tuesday night’s game, a police officer was trampled by people trying to get to the party when the venue was already fully packed, Police Capt. Jesus Ortiz said in an email. The agent was not seriously injured, but was in great pain, Ortiz said.

A 22-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds, but his life was not in danger, police said, adding that they detained a suspect.

In the other shooting, which was simultaneous, a 19-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police detained one suspect and were looking for others.

Milwaukee earned its first NBA championship in 50 years by beating the Phoenix Suns 105-98 to win the series 4-2. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points in a historic performance.
