3 Facts of Lazarus Syndrome, the phenomenon of ‘rising’ from the dead

Jakarta

The death of a 12-year-old girl in Probolinggo became a topic of discussion because she was alive again when her body was about to be bathed. He received treatment for 1 hour before finally dying again.

The phenomenon of ‘rising’ again from the dead, although rare, is actually not a strange thing in the medical world. There are many possible causes, one of which is related lazarus syndrome.

Some facts about this syndrome are summarized as follows.

1. Taken from scripture stories

Quoted from Medicalnewstoday, the name of this syndrome is taken from a scripture story that tells of Lazarus being resurrected after 4 days of death. It is defined as a delayed return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) or a return to pulsation of the circulatory system following CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

Since it was first described in the medical literature in 1982, about 38 cases were recorded. About 82 percent of ROSCs occurred 10 minutes after CPR was stopped and 45 percent of patients experienced good nervous system recovery.

It is believed there were more cases than reported.

2. The cause is mysterious

There has been various speculation about the cause. One of them is the pressure that builds up on the chest when CPR is given. When CPR is stopped, the pressure gradually takes effect and causes the heart to beat again.

Another theory suggests a delayed effect of drugs used for resuscitation. For example adrenaline. Hyperkalemia or high levels of potassium in the blood has also been cited as a possible cause.

3. Determining the limits of life and death is increasingly challenging

There are two types of death that are recognized in medicine namely clinical death and medical death. Clinical death was defined as the absence of a heartbeat, pulse and respiration. Biological death is defined when there is no brain activity.

In practice, there are many conditions that make a person ‘appear’ to have died. For example hypothermia, which is when the body experiences a drastic drop in core temperature due to prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

Hypothermia causes heart rate and breathing to slow down, even to the point of being difficult to detect. Believed hypothermia was behind the misdiagnosis of the death of a newborn in Canada in 2013.
