Indonesian U-20 National Team ended the struggle at the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup by failing to qualify for the quarter-finals. Here are three facts about Garuda Nusantara in this AFC event.

The U-20 Indonesian national team failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup after a 0-0 draw with Uzbekistan. Previously, the U-20 Indonesian national team won 1-0 over Syria and lost 0-2 to Iraq.

Shin Tae Yong’s team is only in third place with four points. Actually, Indonesia and Iraq have the same points, but Iraq is more entitled to win a ticket to the quarter-finals because of superior goal difference.

Nevertheless, Indonesia U-20 still has the right to appear at the 2023 U-20 World Cup. This is because Indonesia is acting as the host for the event which will run from 20 May to 11 June.

Following are three facts about the U-20 Indonesian national team after falling in the group phase of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup which took place in Uzbekistan.

73 Games

Failure to repeat the story of the 2018 edition made the U-20 Indonesian National Team play a total of 73 matches at the U-20 Asian Cup. This number has been recorded since the first edition in 1959.

Of that number, 27 of them ended in wins, 14 draws, and 32 losses. The total goals scored by the U-20 Indonesian National Team were 115 and conceded 122 times.

Single Goal

The U-20 Indonesian national team only scored one goal during the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. This single goal was scored by Hokky Caraka during a match against Syria U-20.

These statistics match the stories of the 1971, 1978 and 1986 U-20 Asian Cups. The difference is that in the three editions the number of goals conceded was higher, namely 4 (1971 and 1978) and 11 (1986).

10th failure

The U-20 Indonesian National Team’s progress in the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup is the 17th in this biennial event. Of the 17 editions, 10 times they failed to qualify for the group stages because they were unable to compete.

The story of 2023 in Uzbekistan breaks the sweet story of the 2018 edition, when Indonesia was the host. At that time, Indonesia U-20 under Indra Sjafri lost 0-2 to Japan in the quarter-finals.
