3 deaths from cholera … A reminder of the instructions

The Ministry of Health has announced the registration of 12 new cases of cholera and 3 deaths in the last 24 hours.

An overview of the disease

  • Most people with cholera infection have mild or no symptoms and can be successfully treated with an oral solution.
  • In 2017, a global cholera control strategy entitled “Ending Cholera: A Global Roadmap to 2030” was launched, with the goal of reducing cholera deaths by 90%.
  • Researchers estimate that there are between 1.3 and 4.0 million cases of cholera per year and that cholera causes between 21,000 and 143,000 deaths worldwide.
  • Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease that can kill within hours if left untreated.
  • Providing safe water and sanitation is critical to preventing and controlling cholera and other waterborne diseases.
  • Severe cholera should be treated with intravenous administration and antibiotics.
  • Oral cholera vaccines should be administered in conjunction with improved water supply and sanitation to control and prevent cholera outbreaks in high-risk areas.

Symptoms

Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause acute watery diarrhea. It takes 12 hours to 5 days for a person to develop symptoms after eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water2. Cholera affects both children and adults and can kill them within hours if left untreated.

Most people infected with Vibrio cholerae are asymptomatic, although the bacteria are present in the stool for 1-10 days after infection, so they are released into the environment and can infect other people.

Most infected people show mild or moderate symptoms, while a minority of them develop acute watery diarrhea accompanied by severe dehydration, which can cause death if left untreated.

Instructions

The Ministry of Public Health has recommended citizens and residents to adopt the following methods to prevent cholera:

– Do not drink or use unsafe water and it is recommended to drink water from sealed water bottles with a guaranteed source.

Do not drink or eat from the same utensils with others.

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water before preparing or eating food and after using the bathroom.

Maintenance of personal hygiene and food hygiene.

Cook the food very well and eat it immediately after cooking.

Seek immediate medical attention if profuse watery diarrhea occurs.
