3 Countries Follow, Britain Boycotts China Winter Olympics

“There will be a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It is expected that no officials and ministers will attend,” British Prime Minister Borris Johnson was quoted as saying. Reuters, Wednesday (8/12).

Johnson said he usually doesn’t support boycotts. However, Britain does not plan to send officials to the Winter Olympics because of alleged human rights violations by China.

“I don’t think sports boycotts make sense, and that remains government policy,” he said.

Despite the diplomatic boycott, Britain will still send athletes to compete in the Winter Olympics.

Responding to the British plan, China itself stated that they did not invite Johnson’s government ranks.

“Creating the issue of official attendance at the Beijing Winter Olympics is the essence of a political smear campaign,” said a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in London.

Previously, Australia and Canada had decided on a diplomatic boycott of the sporting event. The two countries are following in the footsteps of the United States, which announced a boycott on Monday.

They boycotted the Winter Olympics over a number of issues of alleged human rights abuses by China.

“The Biden administration will not send diplomatic representation to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics,” White House Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. AFP.

Psaki then continued, “In light of China’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights violations.”
