Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia —
Success Argentina won the title world Cup for the third time accompanied by numerous controversial events. Here are three Argentine controversies during the event World Cup 2022.
Argentina’s 36-year wait is over. After the excitement at Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, Tango’s team had another taste of success at Lusail Stadium.
Lionel Messi followed in the footsteps of his predecessors, Mario Kempes and Diego Maradona, as the star who led the Albiceleste to world champions.
On the way to the podium to conquer the World Cup and after officially holding the trophy, there have been a series of controversies involving the Argentine national team.
Below are three of Argentina’s controversies during their 2022 World Cup victory:
1. Heated duel against Holland
The quarterfinal match against the Netherlands is arguably the hottest match Argentina has gone through.
Just like the last match which lasted until penalties, Argentina also had to beat De Oranje with 12 right footed kicks.
It was noted that a number of clashes between players from both sides occurred in this match. Even Lionel Messi could not hide his annoyance with coach Louis van Gaal and striker Wout Weghorst.
Messi is said to be annoyed by Van Gaal, who has previously reportedly made comments about Argentina’s play. As for the Weghorst case, Messi was excessively annoyed by the Besiktas player who was deemed disrespectful to his opponents. Messi also went after Weghorst who asked for his clothes in the dressing room.
In addition to this there was also an incident where a pen was poked by an Argentine player who was thought to be from a Dutch national team executive. The commotion started when Leandro Paredes took on Nathan Ake. Paredes then kicked the ball towards the Dutch bench, stirring up emotion.
At the time of the penalty shoot-out, the tension between the Argentinian and Dutch players heated up because there was a provocation. No doubt the Argentinian players then teased the Dutch players after securing victory.
Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz was not without criticism from the Argentine players who felt pained as the match continued until extra time showed 11 minutes and Holland managed to equalize in the last seconds so that the match went to extra rounds and then to penalties.
