3.9 percent salary and at least 14 euros per hour for municipal officials

Municipal officials such as firefighters, boas, garbage collectors and GGD employees will receive 1.5 percent more wages next month. And in April 2022, their wages will increase by another 2.4 percent. This is stated in the new collective labor agreement that the municipalities have agreed with the trade unions.

Municipal officials will also earn a minimum of 14 euros gross per hour from now on. For people who, with that 3.9 percent wage increase, would still be under 14 euros, that means an extra wage increase. According to the FNV trade union, many civil servants earned slightly more than the statutory minimum wage of 10.34 euros. “This is one of the largest collective labor agreements in which we have agreed 14 euros,” says Marieke Manschot of the FNV. “Let’s hope that the new cabinet will follow the example of this collective labor agreement for the rest of the Netherlands.”

Extra benefit and work from home allowance

In addition to the wage increase, the civil servants also receive a one-off extra payment of 1200 euros gross. Municipal officials who have to work from home will from now on receive a homework allowance of 2 euros net per day.

The collective labor agreement runs until 1 January 2023 and applies to approximately 185,000 people. It has been negotiated for almost a year. The municipalities initially offered a zero percent wage increase. “The negotiations were extremely difficult and we had to take action to achieve this result,” said Juan Schot of trade union CNV. “This is also a period in which municipalities must become more attractive as employers in the current tight labor market.”
