The only African representative in the women’s football tournament at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Zambia had a nightmarish introduction by sinking to the score of 10-3 against the Netherlands on Wednesday.
According to Opta, this match set a new record by becoming the most prolific match in the history of the competition, ahead of Germany-China (8-0) in the 2004 Olympics.
While the vice-world champions were notably able to count on a quadruple from Vivianne Miedema, the Zambian Barbara Banda for her part signed a hat-trick (19th, 82nd, 83e), a performance that she is the first African to accomplish at the Olympics. A small consolation …
