3.1 magnitude earthquake in Groningen Wirdum

The KNMI initially reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.2, but later changed it. The quake occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers. Earthquakes occur most frequently in Groningen due to gas extraction.

I have heard widely

Many people write on social media that they felt the shock. The messages come not only from the immediate vicinity of Wirdum, but from all over the world.

Even in the city of Groningen, people felt the ground shake. “Almost shaken awake at 4:17 am,” Margriet Donker, member of the Groningen States tweeted. “Go back to sleep now.”

The strongest earthquake to date in Groningen was on August 16, 2012, near Huizinge, also in the northeast of the province. That earthquake had a magnitude of 3.6.

Two weeks ago, residents of Uithuizen, just north of Wirdum, were quickly startled by two earthquakes, measuring 2.7 and 1.7.
