Things are getting tighter in the 2nd Bundesliga. After victories by Kaiserslautern and Magdeburg, league leaders SC Paderborn’s lead in tenth place is only five points. Thanks to a home win against Braunschweig, FCK drew level with the struggling HSV, where coach Steffen Baumgart had to leave on Sunday. The FCM celebrated a happy away win in Regensburg and is back in touch with the promotion places.

Aches eighth goal: Kaiserslautern suddenly back on top

1. FC Kaiserslautern remains unbeaten for the fifth game in a row and continues to fight its way up the table. Coach Markus Beginn’s team won against Eintracht Braunschweig 3:2 (3:1) and with 20 points is only three points behind a direct promotion place. Braunschweig, on the other hand, remains winless away from home this season and suffered a setback in the relegation battle.

The Palatinate team took a while to get into the game in front of 45,615 spectators in the Fritz Walter Stadium, but took the lead after 17 minutes through Filip Kaloc. The FCK could then have created a two-goal gap. But at the end of the first half, things came to a head.

In the 41st minute, top scorer Ragnar Ache completed a pass from Daniel Hanslik to make it 2-0 – his eighth goal of the season. Rayan Philippe then converted a penalty kick given by Lautern’s Frank Ronstadt (45th). But the old gap was restored before the break when Hanslik made it 3-1 in the second minute of added time. Braunschweig remained largely harmless, but still benefited from an unsuccessful trip by FCK goalkeeper Julian Krahl: Philippe took advantage of this late on to make it 2:3 (90+6), his ninth goal of the season – tied for the top score in the league.

Frustration for Patz: Jahn Regensburg loses against Magdeburg

Andreas Patz had no reason to be happy in his first game after being promoted to head coach of Jahn Regensburg. After the 0:1 (0:1) against 1. FC Magdeburg, the promoted team in the 2nd Bundesliga remains at the bottom of the table, four points behind relegation place 16.

The Magdeburgers presented themselves as the more mature team in front of 11,047 spectators in the Jahnstadion, but the hosts still beat themselves in the end. When the score was 0-1 with the heel of midfielder Mohammed El Hankouri, goalkeeper Felix Gebhardt let the ball slip through his legs. In the 89th minute, Christian Viet missed a flattering penalty for Jahn from the spot. FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann saved the shot.
