As a prelude to the second edition of the African Forum on Research and Innovation (FARI) to be held in Cotonou from May 5 to 9, 2025, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with ECOWAS, organized a press conference. on Friday November 22, 2024, at the Golden Tulipe Le Diplomate hotel. This meeting, chaired by Madame Éléonore YAYI LADEKAN, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, marks the official launch of this international event under the theme: “African Youth, Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Sustainable Construction in the future”. This forum is aimed at young Africans who are interested in the world of science and technology. It will be based on scientific, commercial, media, tourism and cultural activities.
The meeting saw the participation of many political-administrative people, including Mr. Amadou DIONGUE, ECOWAS Ambassador, Dr. Roland KOUAKOU, ECOWAS Director of Education, Science and Culture, as well as representatives of the community scientist, researchers, teacher researchers, and entrepreneurs from ECOWAS member countries. Everyone came together in Cotonou to participate in this symbolic moment that highlights the important issues related to research and innovation in Africa.

In his speech, Mr. Amadou DIONGUE emphasized the importance of scientific research and innovation for the development of the sub-region. He expressed Benin’s desire to support these efforts, while highlighting the dynamism seen in several sectors. He also thanked the ECOWAS ministry for their commitment and contribution to the transformation of the community.
Dr. Roland KOUAKOU, ECOWAS Director of Education, Science and Culture, spoke about the fundamental role of youth in industrial development. He described this generation as “the yeast of the future”, bearers of hope and talent. His intervention emphasized the need to mobilize partners to promote businesses and support FARI 2025, which coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of ECOWAS.
During her opening speech, Madame Éléonore YAYI LADEKAN praised the importance of Cotonou as a platform for this main scientific forum. The Beninese Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research recalled that this annual gathering is an opportunity to bring together researchers, engineers, students and business leaders about contemporary challenges in terms of innovation and research. “This event has a strong symbolic dimension, highlighting the collective commitment to building a sustainable future for Africa,” she said.
Overall, FARI 2025 presents itself as a valuable opportunity for reflection and exchange, aiming to tap into the untapped potential of African youth. So Cotonou, as a showcase of this event, is preparing to welcome brilliant minds that are ready to shape the future of the continent through research and innovation.
This meeting has preparations to hold a conference that will bring together two Heads of State and Government, as well as a session dedicated to ministers responsible for science, research and innovation from ECOWAS member countries. A space will also be dedicated to presenting the research and innovation results of new businesses, engineers and companies from the West African sub-region. In addition, four thematic panels will be moderated by Experts, Scientists, start-up entrepreneurs and representatives of the private sector.
Among other initiatives, it is planned to organize a competition to award three accolades highlighting the most innovative and impactful start-ups.
