The 2nd Bundesliga also starts a new season in the summer. With the 2023/24 season, the second highest division in German football will be held for the 50th time. By default, the 2nd Bundesliga starts a little earlier in the summer than the upper house of the 1st Bundesliga. This is how the 2nd Bundesliga begins in July – 18 teams try to achieve promotion or relegation on 34 match days. In the 2022/23 season, things got exciting again at the end of the 49th season: Both SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Heidenheim had chances for first place. In the end, however, Heidenheim prevailed with also 67 points but the better goal difference.

2nd Bundesliga 2023/24: Beginning and opening game of the anniversary season
Die DFL has scheduled the opening game for the anniversary season of the 2nd Bundesliga for Friday, July 28, 2023. This marks the 50th edition of the second-tier division in German soccer and starts about three weeks before the start of the 1st Bundesliga on August 18th.

Schedule of the 2nd Bundesliga 2023/24: All dates at a glance
After the start of the 2nd Bundesliga on July 28, 2023, it will last until Sunday, May 19, 2024 over the course of 34 match days and a winter break. In the following overview you can find the relevant dates for the coming season:
1st – 17th matchday: July 28 to December 17, 2023

On June 30, 2023, the DFL complete schedule of the 2nd Bundesliga for the 23/24 season published. Hamburger SV and FC Schalke 04 will play the opening game on July 28.
