Whether painting, sculpture, installation, photography or video: the start of the season for the Frankfurt galleries is one of the oldest gallery weekends in Germany – and is now in its 29th round
The studio of the artist and professor Michael Riedel in the Bahnhofsviertel should smell leathery and metallic, but also a touch flowery, when the Frankfurt galleries start their season at the weekend. That is when his former student Christian Kölbl presents a scent installation that deals with the “odor semantics of new cars”. An olfactory work of art that not only appeals to the eyes and ears, but above all to the nose.
Whether fragrant or not, whether painting, sculpture, photography, film or video art: For three decades, thousands of art lovers have been drawn to the city at the beginning of September when the galleries start the season. There will be a total of 38 from September 8th to 10th, further exhibitions will be shown in 16 so-called offspaces, independent and non-commercial project spaces. The number of participating galleries is growing every year, three were added in 2022 and another two this year.
The Frankfurt season start is one of the oldest gallery weekends in Germany and is now being held for the 29th time. Since 2019, it has accompanied the communicative and programmatic superstructure “The Frankfurt Art Experience”, which the City of Frankfurt is funding for the fifth time. The idea for this came from art lover and collector Tyrown Vincent: he wanted to use an innovative format to give new impetus to the public perception of Frankfurt as a city of art.
Season start of the Frankfurt galleries
For the 29th start of the season of Frankfurt’s galleries, which is under the umbrella of “The Frankfurt Art Experience” for the fifth time, 38 galleries and 16 off-spaces will open their exhibitions from September 8th to 11th. Art lovers are invited to look around on Friday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and to talk to artists and gallery owners.
Accompanying 30 Art Walks on Sunday and Monday a maximum of 20 guests each on different routes through the city. Tickets for 10 euros are available on the homepage. myc

“Right from the start, our mission was to increase the visibility of Frankfurt as a gallery location,” says Vincent. Here the long-standing and close cooperation with the gallery owners is now paying off. “The location is changing positively, we see that not only in the response, but also in the quality and variety of the program.”
For culture department head Ina Hartwig (SPD), the “lively gallery scene” is an important part of the cultural urban landscape: “This year we are seeing many artists who studied at the Städelschule and the HfG in Offenbach and are now exhibiting in Frankfurt galleries at the start of the season. This shows “the important bridging function that the galleries perform between the art academies, the collectors and the museums”. Accordingly, the influence of the important and internationally recognized academies in the Rhine-Main area – the Städelschule, the HfG Offenbach or the Kunsthochschule Mainz – is clearly reflected in the program for the start of the season.
The city of Frankfurt supports the gallery weekend with 80,000 euros. The funding also addresses long-term measures, for example to ensure and further develop the communication and organization of the Frankfurt galleries in a contemporary and permanent manner.
