299,000 more deaths in the United States from coronavirus

The impact of the coronavirus is greater than expected in the United States. Over 299,000 more people have died than average in the past five years, according to a new study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports Tuesday.

Nearly 200,000 additional deaths were officially attributed to Covid-19 between January 26 and October 3, 2020. But death figures show that nearly 100,000 people died from other causes. Those additional deaths could have been deaths that should have been attributed to the coronavirus, but were not counted that way due to misdiagnosis or lack of testing. The deaths could also be the indirect result of the pandemic, for example people who died of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and who were unable to reach the hospital due to the health crisis. This is according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Inequality

Previous studies had already shown that the pandemic had increased deaths in the United States by about 20 percent, compared to expected mortality this year. Studies also show that there are clear racial differences. Among the citizens of Hispanic descent there is an increase of 53.6 percent, among the black residents it is 34.6 percent. The death rate among white citizens has increased by 11.9 percent.

Remarkably, the mortality rate among young people under 25 fell by 2 percent. For all other age categories, that figure rose, with a record high of + 26.5 percent among the 25 to 44 year olds.

The report comes just two weeks before the election, the central topic of which is President Trump’s approach to the pandemic. Donald Trump has always tried to minimize the impact of the virus, despite the fact that Covid-19 is likely to be the third leading cause of death in the United States this year after heart disease and cancer.
