282 Arrested at Pro-Palestinian Protests in NYC: What We Know So Far

At Tuesday’s pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University and the City College of New York, 282 people were arrested, according to the New York Police Department.

Of the 112 people arrested in Columbia, 32 (or 29%) were not affiliated with the university, according to an NYPD official. At the City College of New York, 170 people were arrested and 102 (or 60%) of them were not affiliated with the college.

In Columbia, dozens of protesters entered the university’s Hamilton Hall on Tuesday and barricaded themselves inside before the university called for assistance from the NYPD.

Those people could be charged with third-degree burglary, criminal mischief and criminal mischief, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said Tuesday. Protesters in the camps outside could be accused of crime and disorderly conduct, he said.

But on Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan DA said the 46 people arrested inside Hamilton Hall so far have only been charged with one count of a crime.

James Carlson, 40, who was arrested on burglary charges at Columbia University, faces a third-degree felony charge from the Manhattan DA, according to court records. He also faces a charge of arson from a separate incident. He has pleaded not guilty in both cases, according to court records.

He was charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer or EMT, wearing a mask or underwear to avoid police and rioting, San Francisco Superior Court confirmed to CNN. The charges were dropped in 2007.

The defense attorney representing him at the time had no comment.

Aidan Parisi was also arrested in Columbia on burglary charges. Court records show Parisi was arrested, charged with a third-degree felony, and released on his own recognizance. He also pleaded not guilty, according to court records.

Last month, he said The New York Times he was suspended from the Columbia School of Social Work and fought to be removed from student housing.

Columbia University directory shows that Parisi is listed as a student at the university’s school of social work.

Amelia Fuller was arrested on burglary charges at the City College of New York, according to an NYPD official. She was fired from her job at the New York Botanical Gardens after she said in a video that she felt “proud” after the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, an NYPD official said.

“This past weekend, a video was brought to our attention that showed a NEBG employee making a recent disturbing statement about the attacks in Israel on October 7th. NOBG,” the New York Botanical Gardens said in a statement.

CNN has reached out to her attorney for comment.

Jacob Gabriel and Rudy Martinez were both arrested on burglary charges, an NYPD official said.

Both were arrested Thursday on burglary charges and released on their own recognizance. They also pleaded not guilty, according to court records.

Before leaving the courtroom, other demonstrators gave them surgical masks to protect their faces and used keffiyehs to shield themselves from cameras. They did not say anything to reporters. Their lawyers declined to comment to CNN.

Nora Fayad, who was also arrested on burglary charges, reportedly said “We are Hamas” in a viral video, an NYPD official said.

She was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree burglary. She pleaded not guilty, according to court records. Fayad was released on her own recognizance. Other protesters were on either side of her as they covered her face and took her out of the courtroom and the courthouse.

Her attorney declined to comment to CNN.

Jesse Pape was arrested on resisting arrest and assault charges related to the protests.

He was arrested, charged with one count of assault in the second degree and one count of obstructing government administration, according to court records, and released on his own recognizance. his own He pleaded not guilty, according to court records.
