2,800 people exchange private sector for education

The number of so-called lateral entrants rose to the highest level ever last school year. More than 2,800 people made the transition from the private sector to education. That is 15 percent more than in the previous school year.

This is evident from figures released on Sunday by Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA). Since 1 September last year, lateral entrants can take along up to eight years of seniority if they switch to education to teach a bottleneck subject. ‘This is one of the measures to tackle the teacher shortage,’ says Weyts. ‘We will continue on our chosen path and add more bottlenecks to the list.’

Weyts indicates that people who opt for education do so ‘because they want to teach children and young people with passion: it is not about the big money. But having to let go of all the accumulated seniority can deter candidates. In light of the corona crisis, there may be even more people who are considering a career change.’

It is already possible to include up to eight years of seniority for primary school teachers and for the subjects Dutch, Dutch for newcomers, French, mathematics, construction, electricity, wood, mechanics, commercial correspondence French and commercial correspondence Dutch.
