Initial reports suggest a potential malfunction in the plane’s landing gear may have contributed to the crash. “Police and firefighters are investigating the exact cause of the crash, which they beleive was caused by a failure in the deployment of the plane’s landing gear, possibly caused by a bird collision,” according to initial statements. The plane reportedly attempted a forced landing after its initial attempt failed, but was unable to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway, resulting in the crash and subsequent fire. Eyewitnesses even reported that some tires failed to deploy.
The first reports of the accident emerged shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time, but emergency response teams didn’t arrive on the scene until 46 minutes later. Eighty personnel from the rescue headquarters and the Fire Aviation Unit were deployed to the scene.
