For HC Empor Rostock, promotion to the 2nd handball league is a long way off. The team of coach Till Wiechers lost the quarter-final first leg against VfL Pfullingen on Saturday 27:32 (14:14) and needs a miracle in the second leg on Saturday.

The result was “a huge mortgage and totally bitter,” said coach Wiechers. “We will still try to turn the whole thing around, even if it will be very difficult,” said the coach. And further: “We have to cope with the fact that we had no chance today.”

The hosts started furiously. The Rostockers were quick on their feet in defense, wide awake and resolutely grabbed. VfL was impressed. After ten minutes, Empor led 6-1. In the period that followed, the Pfullinger family got on better. Building on a strong goalkeeper (Simon Tölke), they shortened the gap and put on their dreaded speed game. At 9: 9 (23rd) everything was open again.

Both teams played fast. Upward led several times with two goals, but the Pfullinger struck back again and again ice-cold.

Even after the break, the Rostock found it difficult. VfL pulled away at 20:17 (40th). At 23:23 (51st) everything was open again. A little later, guest coach Daniel Brack switched to the system with the seventh field player. The concept worked. Upward found no means, conceded one goal after the other and fell clearly behind in the final phase.
