JAKARTA – Storm Sun The strongest, according to scientists, occurred about 2,700 years ago, and may be repeated. So what are the implications if it takes place now?
Reporting from USA Today, Monday (21/2/2022), a new study says there was an unusually strong solar storm that swept over Earth about 2,700 years ago.
In those days, when people lived in pre-industrial and pre-technological times, these events had little or no impact on people.
However, if a similar storm were to hit Earth today, it could have the potential to cause widespread power outages as well as potentially crippling communications and impairing navigation.
“The Solar Storm in 660 BC, was about 10 times stronger than the events known in the last 70 years,” said study lead author Raimund Muscheler.
This study suggests that solar storms of similar strength will pose a threat to modern society in terms of communication and navigation systems, space technology, and commercial aircraft operations.
Scientists study ancient ice in Greenland for clues about solar storms. Looking at ice cores dating back 100,000 years, the researchers found radioactive isotopes that indicated a very strong solar storm 2,700 years ago.
