Rescue workers on the Australian island of Tasmania hurry to rescue a large group of stranded whales. Of the 270 whales that have become stranded on sandbanks off the coast, at least a third has died and it is feared that more will die.
Yesterday the stranded whales were discovered off the coast and efforts have been made to save the animals ever since. Marine biologists believe it will be days before the rescue operation is complete. Many whales are in shallow water, which makes the operation difficult.
Triage is going to be very important here, says biologist Carlyson. “We are dealing with a group of animals spread over a large area in a difficult location. So we will try to save the animals with the best chances first. “
