27-year-old man dies after eating butter chicken
London: The cause of death of a 27-year-old man in England after eating butter chicken was diagnosed as allergic anaphylaxis. The young man collapsed after eating a piece of butter chicken bought as a parcel. He died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. The coroner’s court confirmed the young man’s cause of death was an allergy to almonds in butter chicken.
Joseph Higginson, from Bury, Greater Manchester, England, died during treatment. On December 28, 2022, Higginson collapsed while eating with his family. The young man was suffering from anaphylaxis, an allergy to tree nuts and almonds. Higginson was diagnosed with allergies months before his death. Higginson was carrying an EpiPen, a device used for allergic reactions. Despite immediate medical intervention, Higginson’s condition rapidly deteriorated.
The coroner’s court heard that the menu clearly stated that butter chicken contained almonds. It is believed that Higginson ate butter chicken because he had no problem eating nuts before.
