The crime happened the night before yesterday. An Israeli flag that was hoisted in front of Graz Castle was probably damaged by a cigarette – we reported. Now the alleged perpetrator has been caught – it is a 27-year-old from Graz. Because of the media coverage, he went to the Schmiedgasse police station in the late afternoon of December 16th, as the police now report.
That’s why the Israeli flag was damaged
The man was then questioned about the matter by officials from the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism (LVT) and confronted with the available facts. The 27-year-old made a full confession. A general dissatisfaction with the Austrian position in the Middle East conflict, reinforced by the heavy consumption of alcohol, led him to deliberately damage the Israeli flag. The suspect is now being reported to the Graz public prosecutor’s office on suspicion of damaging property and denigrating other people’s symbols.
Styrian politicians thank the investigators involved
Governor Christopher Drexler and deputy governor Anton Lang Late on Saturday evening, they thanked the Styrian State Police Directorate for their consistent investigative work: “We would like to thank the Styrian police and in particular the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism for their important work and the rapid success of the investigation,” said the two political leaders.
