A 27-year-old Amsterdammer who after an argument at a festival another man stabbed in front of the entrance to the OLVG West was sentenced to three years in prison by the court. The sentence for attempted murder is significantly lower than the five years requested by the Planning Service.
The two clashed last September at the Parels van de Stad festival, near the Riekerhaven. A fight ensues, in which both men are injured. The victim then drives with a friend to OLVG West to receive treatment. The suspect does the same thing, without knowing each other.
Things go wrong again at the hospital entrance. The victim and his friend shout, “Hey, there it is!”, after which the suspect runs towards them and another fight ensues. The suspect stabs the victim with a knife three times in the upper arm and chest, near the heart area. He is seriously injured and shifted to the AMC in critical condition.
“The suspect was under emotional stress and grabbed his knife to scare his assailants”
According to his lawyer, there was an emergency situation. During the struggle, the victim’s friend kicked the suspect’s arm, causing it to break. “My client acted out of emotional stress and grabbed his knife to stop his attackers,” said his lawyer, who argued for acquittal.
The court does not agree with this. By running towards the couple, the suspect assumed a ‘direct attack and surge’ position and could have expected a counter-reaction. The fact that he broke his hand, according to the court, does not mean that there was an emergency defense, in which someone acts in self-defense.
“The fact that the stabbing happened in front of the entrance to the hospital may have been the reason the victim’s life could have been saved.”
A difficult childhood
The suspect must have known that the victim could die when he stabbed him in the chest, the court continues, which therefore finds that attempted murder has been proven . “The fact that the stabbing happened in front of the entrance to a hospital may even have saved the victim’s life.” ‘ court believes that a ‘heavy’ prison sentence is appropriate.
The reason the sentence is lower than the Public Prosecution Service’s request is because the suspect is ‘relatively young’ and has ‘raised his life well despite a difficult childhood’ . He also expressed remorse several times and the victim ‘also participated in the campaigns’.
In addition to the prison sentence, the suspect must pay more than 12,000 euros in compensation to the victim, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

What insights can Mr. van der Hoek provide regarding the psychological factors that may lead an individual to resort to violence in heated situations like a festival argument?
Thank you for joining us today on World-Today News. We have two guests in the studio with us: Mr. Sebastiaan van der Hoek, a criminal psychologist with extensive experience in analyzing cases of violence and conflict resolution, and Ms. Anna Groeneweg, a community advocate who works with at-risk youth in Amsterdam.
[To Mr. van der Hoek] Can you share your thoughts on the verdict of the court sending the 27-year-old Amsterdammer to prison for three years for stabbing another man during an argument at a festival? Does this seem like an appropriate punishment given the severity of the crime and the potential harm that could have been caused?
[To Ms. Groeneweg] As someone who works with at-risk youth in Amsterdam, what are your thoughts on the fact that the perpetrator has a ‘difficult childhood’ as stated by the court? Does this influence your perception of their actions and the potential consequences they should face?
[To both guests] In your opinion, how can incidents like this be prevented in the future? Is it a matter of better conflict resolution skills, stricter laws or more community intervention?
[To Mr. van der Hoek] As a criminal psychologist, what do you think motivated the suspect to act out in such a violent manner during the altercation? Could it have been impulsivity or was there an underlying issue that led to this escalation?
[To Ms. Groeneweg] As a community advocate, what role do you think the environment and surroundings played in this incident? Given that the stabbing occurred near a hospital entrance, do you believe this had any influence on the severity of the situation?
[To both guests] How can we ensure that events like festivals remain safe spaces for attendees while also addressing potential conflicts and elevated tensions that may occur? Are there any measures that could be implemented to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future?
[To Mr. van der Hoek] The article mentions that the perpetrator broke his hand during the fight. Can you explain how this might have affected his state of mind and the severity of the crime he committed? Could it have been considered as a form of self-defense or was it still a deliberate act
