264 new fruit trees for Odenwald orchards

The landscape conservation and nature conservation department of the Odenwaldkreis issued 264 tall fruit trees as part of this year’s orchard campaign, and they were planted by 53 committed citizens.

There was trunk protection for all trees, posts to support and wire baskets to protect against voles. The campaign was funded by the Darmstadt Regional Council, so that only 25 euros had to be paid for each tree.

The apple variety “Goldparmäne” was the most popular among fruit lovers. A total of 174 apple and 36 pear trees were ordered, as well as cherry, plum and mirabelle trees. The Odenwaldkreis thanks everyone who contributes to the preservation of the orchards with a new tree and the Bad König building yard, which served as an issuing point.

In order to preserve the orchards in the Odenwald as valuable biotopes for many (also rare) species, as an important resource for the local wine presses and, in particular, as a defining element of the Odenwald cultural landscape, an orchard campaign is to take place again in the coming year. The press will provide information about this next year, and the order forms will be online again from mid-August 2022 www.odenwaldkreis.de.
