250,000 People Demonstrate Across Germany Against Far-Right Alternative for Germany Party

About 250,000 people demonstrated across Germany against the far-right Alternative for Germany party, a number of whose members recently discussed the mass expulsion of people of foreign origin.

The largest marches took place in Frankfurt, the country’s financial capital, where 35,000 participants gathered, according to local police, behind a banner reading “Defending Democracy – Frankfurt against the Alternative for Germany party.”

A similar number gathered in Hanover, and some participants held banners reading, “Nazis out.” About 30,000 people demonstrated in the streets of Dortmund, and 16,000 in Halle, according to police. Demonstrations were also held in Erfurt, Aachen, Kassel and a number of other small towns.

On January 10, the German investigative website Correctiv revealed a meeting held by extremists in Potsdam, near Berlin, where a plan for the collective expulsion of foreigners or people of foreign origin was discussed last November.

Interior Minister Nancy Wieser went so far as to consider that this meeting was reminiscent of the “terrible Wannsee Conference,” where the Nazis planned to exterminate European Jews in 1942. A number of political leaders, including Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz, also stressed that any plan to expel people Of foreign origins is an attack on democracy.
