It is possible that one of the oldest celestial maps, 2500 years old, was found in Italy.
In the province of Trieste, on the top of the Castelleri di Rupinpiccolo hill, archaeologists were able to discover two round stones with a diameter of 50 cm. On one of them you can see 29 of the 28 stars that exist today.
It is possible that this is one of the most ancient star maps ever found in Italy, the resource informs Archeonews.
Employees of the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics report that between 1800 and 400 BC. e. there was a fortification on this hill and people lived.
The stones were studied in detail by Paolo Molaro, an employee of the Institute of Astrophysics, and an employee of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. According to them, one of the stones represents the sun, and the second – the starry sky. The “map” itself dates back to the 4th century BC. e.
It is possible that this map shows the starry sky over Rupinpiccolo in the 4th century BC. e. On the map you can see the constellations of Scorpio, Orion, Cassiopeia and the Pleiades.
To create the map, the master used the simplest tools – a hammer and a chisel.
Using the Stellarium program, scientists have found a 29th star that is not currently visible: a supernova. If this map is superimposed on today’s starry sky, then in the place of the 29th star there is a black hole.
To date, the oldest star map is a bronze artifact found in Germany. It dates back to 1600 BC. e., however, the images on it are very schematic.
