25 Years of the Zamora Museum: A Journey of Heritage and Enrichment

“Today is a great day for Zamora,” declared the then Minister of Culture, Hope Aguirrethat July 28, 1998when he approached the capital to inaugurate the new headquarters of the Zamora Museumin a modern building built next to the Cord Palace. Madrid politics would know few details of the vicissitudes that had been overcome to achieve this new location, which bore the signature of the architects Emilio Tunon and Luis Mansilla. Who does remember it almost as if it were yesterday she is the director of the museum, Rosario Garcia Rozaswho came to Zamora in May 1986 and did not see this dream come true until twelve years later.

Long-awaited inauguration

25 years have passed since that expected inauguration and the museo it has not remained anchored, far from it, in yesterday —despite the fact that its pieces only remind it and also remind the people of Zamora of its origins—, but it complies with the double objective to continue enriching its heritage and opening up to visitors with the most diverse proposals, from conferences to workshops, through guided tours or exhibitions of current established artists.

“We have been very respectful both with the building and with the museographic installation“, warns the director of the museum, who recognizes that the showcases are the same ones that she makes 25 years“but whoever visits us again can discover many new contributions, both archaeological and from the field of Fine arts“, he invites. In this list that does not stop growing, García Rozas stands out, one of the last, arriving at Zamora last October.

From decades of waiting

In October 1974 the Zamora Provincial Museum of Fine ArtsLocated in the Las Marinas convent. In August 1975, that building was demolished. Santa Clara street to build the Treasury delegation, not without complaints from society before the decision of the administration and the resignation of the director of the museum. The works were provisionally transferred to the church of the incarnation and from there they relocated to the church of santa luciaalready in December 1989. Three years later she had arrived in the city as the new director Rosario Garcia Rozaswho had to wait until July 1998 to see the current building of the Zamora Museum came true. “There were a few years and quite a few ups and downs,” he admits.

“There was an initial project, but it did not materialize, several companies went bankrupt due to various problems and operations were interrupted construction. It was difficult to make a clean slate “, he sums up. But the star project arrived, after the culture Ministry He commissioned several directing studios. The challenge was awarded to the architects Emilio Tunon and Luis Mansilla and the works were resumed, which lasted from 1993 to 1995, to give as a final result a building that has received several architecture awards. Meanwhile, a provisional installation had been set up “where a series of works that had entered after the museum’s closure in 1974 to date were exhibited, in addition to having a small room dedicated to the project of the new museum itself, with a model that still we kept and a few plans and panels that explained the works that were being carried out”, says García Rozas.

Although the works were definitively completed in 1996, another arduous task then began, that of the assembly process and interior conditioning of the building, which lasted until shortly before its inauguration in July 1998. “When the funds were transferred to the church of Santa Lucía, they already began to practice currents of the new museography, as was the subject of visitable warehouses. So the church was conditioned to house the money and they could be shown to the public”, details the director, who highlights the large wooden lecterns that still stand, supporting the large stone pieces. A current that has remained in the museo and that gives it a particular seal that convinces and triumphs.
