“25 thousand pesos is almost an insult to people” – 2024-08-06 21:58:00

Following the severe storm of wind and rain that affected the O’Higgins region, more than 4,000 homes in Rancagua remain without electricity, more than 96 hours after the start of the emergency. The mayor of Rancagua, Emerson Avendaño, expressed his frustration at the lack of an effective response from the electricity distribution company, CGE.

“It is unsustainable and outrageous that a monopoly company, which has seen a significant increase in energy costs recently, cannot provide services as it should,” Avendaño said.

The mayor stressed that the municipality has been actively working on the ground to clear trees and facilitate the restoration of power, even though this is not a direct responsibility of the municipality.

Avendaño also called on SERNAC to get directly involved in the case, requesting that the organization take part in the resolution of the conflict. “We ask SERNAC not to take part, we as a municipality have enabled platforms so that residents can quantify the damage they have suffered in their homes and we can support them in everything they require,” he said.

The mayor of Rancagua criticized the compensation offered by CGE, calling it insufficient. “25 thousand pesos is almost an insult to people. What about the stores? What about people who have few resources and have to freeze when products are cheaper? 25 thousand pesos, really, is a joke,” said Avendaño.

The mayor also did not rule out taking legal action against CGE. “We are going to provide all the legal advice that is required in light of the fault committed by the electricity company. We do not rule out any action, apart from the direct advice that we can give to each of the residents,” he said. Avendaño expressed his concern for the small stores that have lost valuable products, regretting that the compensation offered does not even cover the inconvenience caused.
