As many as 25 people died when the police were involved firing dno one drug dealers. The incident took place in the Jacarezinho slum of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Reported Reuters, Friday (7/5/2021), one of the policemen also died in the incident. The incident began when the police were about to raid an area that was a place for drug dealers.
The drug dealers try to escape when the police arrive in armored vehicles and helicopters. Shootout ensued.
In that incident, three policemen were injured and one died. The police chief, Ronaldo Oliveira, said the incident was the largest number of deaths in a police operation.
“This is the largest number of deaths in a police operation in Rio, surpassing 19 in the Complexo do Alemão slum area in 2007, unless we didn’t lose any of us in the action,” police chief Ronaldo Oliveira told Reuters.
Police said one of the people killed was the leader of a drug-trafficking gang in the area. In addition, the police also arrested 10 suspects.
Apart from being drug dealers, the perpetrators also often rob cargo trucks. In early 2021, the gang also hijacked commuter trains to loot passengers’ belongings.
