25% of young adults are overweight


In 2019-2020, 18% of the 4- to 25-year-olds were overweight. This was slightly higher than in the years before. In 2015-2016 and 2017-2018 this was 16%. Obesity is most common in young adults from 18 to 25 years old. There the share is 25%. Statistics Netherlands reports this in the Youth Monitor in response to new figures from the Health Survey and Lifestyle Monitor that was set up in collaboration with RIVM.

Statistics Netherlands and RIVM have combined the data from the 2019 and 2020 research years. In addition, 4,200 young people were surveyed. For children up to the age of 12, there is no significant difference in health perception between children with and without obesity. Overweight young people from the age of 12 are less positive about their health than young people who are not overweight.

93% of young people aged 12 to 18 years without overweight experience their own health as good or very good. This is 83% among their overweight peers. In young adults, 90% of those who are not overweight experience their own health as good or very good. This is 84% ​​among the overweight group.
