Liberation from Nazi-fascism is celebrated on April 25th. On the occasion of the 79th anniversary of this historic date, there are many events in the symbolic places of the Resistance along the peninsula.
Free museums to celebrate
State museums and archaeological parks will be open for free, as proposed by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano. Therefore, 3 free entry dates in places of culture will be added to Sunday at the Museum (12 days a year) also in 2024: 25 April, 2 June and 4 November.

The Resistance Festival in Rome
In Rome from 23 to 25 April there is the Festa della Resistenza, three days of events, with around 80 events. Lessons, meetings, shows, concerts, screenings and exhibitions, to remember and share the values of the Italian Resistance in the places of the city where the partisans fought eighty years ago. A “feast of freedom” which will see alternating interventions in various spaces of the city by historians, scholars, journalists and artists who will tell the public about one of the highest moments in Italy’s history. Among the guests: Corrado Augias, Alessandro Barbero, Lucia Ceci, Davide Conti, Giovanni De Luna. Stefania Ficacci, Mimmo Franzinelli, Umberto Gentiloni, Isabella Insolvibile. Ezio Mauro, Marco Mondini, Michela Ponzani, Riccardo Sansone, Anthony Santilli, Benedetta Tobagi and many others.

“Milan is Memory”
Milan will celebrate on April 25th with “Milan is Memory”, a series of events dedicated to the themes of partisan resistance and the war of liberation. The day will be opened by the laying of wreaths in memory of the martyrs of the War of Resistance. It starts at 9 am, in Piazza Tricolore, near the monument to the Guardia di Finanza. While the last deposition will be in Piazzale Loreto, where at dawn on 10 August 1944 15 partisans were shot. The traditional demonstration of April 25th will then begin at 2pm, with the procession from Corso Venezia to Piazza Duomo and celebratory speeches.

In Naples CGIL and ANPI read the Constitution and Scurati
CGIL and ANPI will be in the square for “Make way to the Constitution”, a collective reading of the articles of the Constitution to celebrate the anniversary of the Liberation. The appointment is at 9.30 in Largo Berlinguer. The articles of the Constitution will be read by workers, students, representatives of politics, culture and associations. And after the censorship in Rai, the writer’s monologue will be read in public Antonio Scurati and copies of the Constitution will be distributed, printed in a limited edition to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Metropolitan Chamber of Labor of Naples. April 25 will also mark the start of the collection of signatures for the four referendums presented by the CGIL on layoffs, contracts and precariousness.

The celebrations in Bologna
In Bologna the celebrations will open at 9.30 in the Cloister of the Basilica of Santo Stefano, with the laying of a wreath on the tombstone of those fallen in war. At 10.15 in Piazza Nettuno the flag raising with military picket of honor and the laying of a wreath at the Shrine of the Fallen Partisans are scheduled, followed by an institutional moment. At 12, in the Garden of Villa Cassarini in Porta Saragozza, a wreath will be placed on the plaque in memory of the homosexual victims in the Nazi extermination camps. From 4.30pm to 6.30pm, the “Gran Ballo della Liberazione” is scheduled in Piazza Maggiore in collaboration with the Bolognese traditional dance associations.

Bologna celebrates April 25th with the reading marathon of Scurati’s monologue

On April 25th in Genoa
In Genoa, the celebrations will open at 8 in the monumental cemetery of Staglieno. Here a procession will form which will leave for the laying of wreaths at the Israeli camp, at the monuments dedicated to the internees and deportees in the Nazi concentration camps, at the Trento and Trieste shrine. At 8.50, then, to the camp of the fallen partisans. The commemorations will continue at 10am, with a gathering in Piazza della Vittoria. From here a procession will start to reach the Monumental bridge where wreaths will be laid at the shrine of the Fallen Partisans. The procession will then arrive in Largo Pertini to lay other wreaths. And finally, it will reach Piazza Matteotti where, at 11.15, the Municipality and Region will bring their greetings. The memorial service was given by Sergio Cofferati.

In Trieste the ceremony at the Risiera di San Sabba
Trieste will celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Liberation with a solemn ceremony in the internal courtyard of the San Sabba Risiera national monument, scheduled for 11am, in the presence of civil, military and religious authorities. Following, at 12, the appointment will be with the traditional concert of the Trieste Partisan Choir-Trzaski Partizanski Pevski Zbor ‘Pinko Tomazic’.

Mattarella arrives in Tuscany
In Tuscany, the President of the Republic is expected Sergio Mattarella. The Head of State will spend April 25th in Civitella in Val di Chiana, above Arezzo, site of one of the most brutal Nazi-fascist massacres with 244 victims. In Florence the celebrations will start at 10am with the laying of a laurel wreath in honor of the fallen in Piazza Unità Italiana. The procession will start from there and reach Palazzo Vecchio. The ceremony on the arengario is scheduled for 11 am. At the end, Stefano Massini will read Antonio Scurati’s monologue, as will the mayor Luca Salvetti in Livorno.

Initiatives of the Anpi, CGIL and Arci in Palermo
A day of fighting for Peace, supporting the Constitution and fighting new fascisms. This will be the meaning of the day of the 79th anniversary of the Liberation of Anpi, CGIL, Arci and the associations united in the Palermo Network for the defense and implementation of the Constitution – La via Maestra. The usual ceremony with the civil and military authorities will be held at 9am in the Piersanti Mattarella park. At 9.30 am the laying of laurel wreaths and flowers on the tombstone of the fallen of Kefalonia and on the memorial stone of Pompeo Colajanni, Commander Barbato, who contributed to the liberation of the city of Turin from the Nazi-Fascists. The traditional procession will start at 10.15 from the English Garden and will travel along via Libertà and via Ruggero Settimo. Arrival expected at 11.15 in Piazza Verdi, in front of the steps of the Teatro Massimo.
