REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Canalys estimates that 240 million PCs will be thrown into landfills after October 2025 when Microsoft ending free support for Windows 10. Microsoft will provide paid support until October 2028 but upgrades will likely be cheaper.
Reported Neowin, Monday (25/12/2023), when Microsoft released Windows 11, this was done with the requirement that computers have TPM 2.0 support for additional security. However, many computers before Windows 11 doesn’t support this so can’t upgrade of Windows 11.
With the requirement to acquire new hardware, analyst firm Canalys estimates that as many as 240 million PCs will be thrown away even if they work well. This isn’t a major breakthrough for Microsoft’s green credentials.
If your computer does not support TPM 2.0, there are several things you can do to help minimize landfill issues. The first option is to switch to Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or another Linux distribution.
Linux works very well on most computers and it’s not too difficult to write an ISO image to a USB and install it on a PC, the process should take about 30 minutes. With most of our computing done online, the lack of Windows software for Linux isn’t much of an issue these days.
If you really need to use Windows and plan to throw away the old computer, then take out anything removable like hard drive and memory (on laptop).
Hard drive can be placed in boxes hard drive external available on sites like Amazon, giving you hard drive new external, and RAM can be used with other devices to add more memory if they need it. You can also sell a number of these spare parts.
