A 24-year-old African-American man from Jacksonville, Florida, is reportedly suffering “extreme pain” at a local hospital after a confrontation with local law enforcement, according to his legal representatives. The incident, which began as a traffic stop on Friday, September 29, gained attention online due to the release of body camera footage showing the man’s arrest.
Marwan Porter, Le’Keian Woods’ legal representative, expressed concern about the severity of Woods’ injuries during a press conference. He suggested that Woods might have a damaged kidney and that he is suffering from severe migraines. “He is in intense and unbearable pain,” Porter said.
Broderick Taylor, another attorney representing Woods and his family, reported that Woods’ physical condition has deteriorated to the point that he is unable to walk or eat without vomiting. Taylor also noted that Woods’ vision has been significantly affected due to facial swelling and bruising caused by the incident, he said. NBC News.
Why was he arrested?
Attorneys confirmed that Woods has been receiving medical care since Friday’s incident, during which he allegedly fled a traffic stop and was subsequently chased and physically assaulted by police officers. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office representative Mike Shell stated that deputies reported seeing Woods in a drug transaction, which led to a chase when he fled during the arrest of two other individuals.
Body camera footage shows detectives chasing Woods through several locations before using a stun gun on him. These images, which have gone viral, show Woods falling on a paved road with his arm underneath him while detectives beat him, causing visible injuries.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the controversial recording, arguing that it presents “a misleading picture of inappropriate use of force.” Sheriff TK Waters confirmed that force was used, but defended the officers’ actions, stating that “the unpleasant appearance of force does not mean it is illegal or contrary to policy.”
Lawyers dissatisfied with the police version
Porter strongly disagreed with this interpretation. He suggested that if the actions shown in the images conform to department policies, it is a sign of a major problem. “We are here to ensure accountability,” she said.
Woods was ultimately arrested on multiple charges, including armed trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, tampering with evidence and resisting an officer.
Porter challenged the validity of several charges, particularly those related to firearms, as the recovered gun was not in Woods’ possession but was found on another person detained at the scene. The lawyer also stressed that the physical assault was an “unlawful use of force” and indicated his plans to file misconduct charges.
In response to the incident, Woods’ family expressed their hope that the officers involved face legal repercussions.
