The rumor was more and more insistent, it is now official: Porsche is retiring from the LMP1 endurance class by the end of the season.
After three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a record number of cups lifted on the legendary Circuit Manceau, the German team will devote itself to Formula Electric by 2019. In a press release, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, promoter of the WEC – the endurance world championship – “regret this hasty departure”:
The Automobile Club de l’Ouest, promoter of the WEC, regrets this hasty departure, as well as the brutality of this decision on the part of this manufacturer crowned with the finest laurels of Endurance.
All that remains is Toyota in the “queen” category which has already seen the departure of Peugeot in 2012, then Audi last year. The ACO announces that it is already working “on the contours of the 2018 season which will be quite exceptional with its new features”.
