Ultimately, this time 340 applications were received to stop the stables. The lion’s share – 209 pig farmers – comes from West Flanders. In Antwerp, 47 farmers put themselves forward, 28 in Limburg, 51 in East Flanders and 5 in Flemish Brabant.
After eligible companies receive an offer from the Flemish Land Agency, they have one year to stop their activities, empty the stables and remove the stable equipment, have the environmental permit amended and request the cessation payment.
Of the 236 pig farmers who applied in the first call, only eleven have actually closed down their business. According to Demir, a final balance sheet can be drawn up on October 17 at the earliest. Farmers will still be marketing their last pigs, and that will take time, it sounds. For the second call, this will only be possible in 2025.
