230 whales stranded in Tasmania, rescue operation started | animals

Rescuers try to rescue a large group of beached whales on the Australian island of Tasmania. The animals are found on a stretch of beach on the west side of the island that is difficult to access. More than half of the 230 pilot whales have died, he reports foreign average.-

Whales swim in large groups and usually blindly follow the leader. If a leader strays and enters too shallow water, the animals can get stranded. This happens, for example, when they are looking for food offshore.

Rescuers try to wet the animals still alive with water. It is difficult to get pilot whales back into the water. But they are planning to try this with the strongest animals in the group.

The carcasses of deceased whales are dragged from the beach. This is to prevent the smell of corpses from attracting sharks.
