23-year-old son of actor Mathias Sercu is battling cancer: “In hospital he asked us to take good care of his dog” | showbiz

showbizThese are turbulent times for actor Mathias Sercu (51), currently seen in ‘My worst best friend’. His son Tore (23) was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of last year. He tells this in the newspaper of West Flanders. “My family is holding me up today. Not a day goes by without us saying we love each other.”

On Mother’s Day last year, Tore suddenly felt very tired. A blood test showed that the values of his kidneys were very bad. “He had to go to hospital immediately,” Sercu told the Krant van West-Vlaanderen. “They did a bone marrow biopsy, which showed that he had a very high dose of calcium and phosphorus in his blood and holes in his bones. His whole marrow was full of malignant cells. The next day they were supposed to start the chemo, but suddenly we got a call in the middle of the night because he couldn’t take it anymore. Those are scenes you know from the movie. Driving through deserted streets at night, arriving at an empty parking lot, walking to the twelfth floor and seeing your son sitting there. Gasping for breath and with a raspy voice sorry and whether we want to take good care of his dog. That’s heartbreaking. They then put him to sleep and started the chemo. After four days, he woke up and really started to improve again.”

Two weeks later, Sercu’s family was diagnosed. “They call what he has plasmablastic myeloma, a very complex cancer genome with many mutations. From May until now he had to undergo very heavy chemotherapy. In October they did a stem cell transplant. On Friday (today, ed.) he has to go back in for six weeks for an allogeneic stem cell transplant, in which his sister donates the stem cells. What 2022 will bring is one big question mark. He’ll be dead in a few months for the same money. That’s weird and hard to say, but it’s the reality. And it works just as well and other problems arise. It is real fucked up. My family keeps me upright today. Not a day goes by without us saying we love each other.”
