In particular, there are several handwritten notes that were found in the 23-year-old’s home after the shooting, which are used as the basis for this.

Three killed

Three people were killed in the shooting incident at the Field’s shopping center on Amager in Copenhagen on 3 July last year. Those killed were a boy and a girl aged 17 and a 46-year-old man.

Several others were shot and wounded and others were injured in connection with the shooting. Altogether, the indictment against the man referred to 23 victims, writes Denmark’s radio.

The 23-year-old was charged with murder and attempted murder. He was in possession of a rifle, ammunition and a knife when he was arrested. The public prosecutor’s office does not consider the mass shooting to be a terrorist attack.

– Do not remember

The man has acknowledged the facts, but denies criminal guilt and claims he was insane at the time of the crime. According to the man’s defender, Luise Høj, he does not remember what happened when he fired shots inside the shopping centre.

She argued in court that admission to a regular, closed psychiatric ward was sufficient for the man.

The top-security psychiatric ward the man will be placed in is known colloquially as Sikringen, and is more reminiscent of a prison with very high security, better staffing and the possibility of more coercive interventions than in a normal psychiatric ward.

Høj says that the 23-year-old will now consider whether he wants to appeal the sentence. He has two weeks to make a decision.

– We want to read the judgment before we decide on a possible appeal, says lawyer Luise Høj.
