From 24 to 30 August, 163 people tested positive in our province, 5 fewer than the week before. The reproduction number for Limburg is now 0.999, which means that the number of infections remains stable.
In eleven Limburg municipalities, no new contamination has been detected for seven days. Alken, Bocholt, Hamont-Achel, Herstappe, Hoeselt, Lummen, Peer, Riemst and Voeren have even been corona-free for two weeks. Although the number of infections remains stable or decreases slightly in most municipalities, it is striking that Genk continues to contend with a remarkably high infection rate.
The last seven days, 34 people tested positive in the mining community. “In the past two days, 18 infections have emerged, mainly people returning from holidays in Turkey and Spain,” says mayor Wim Dries (CD&V). The infections mainly occur within families. “The people are in quarantine and are closely monitored.”
