2204 Gotham Awards Winners List

Gotham Awards Kick Off Awards Season with a Curveball

The Gotham Awards, often seen as the unofficial starting gun for Hollywood’s awards season, delivered some surprises Monday night in New York City. A24’s darkly comedic thriller, "A Different Man," took home the coveted Best Feature award. This win could signal a powerful contender for future awards shows.

The film, written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, tells the unsettling story of Edward, an aspiring actor played by Sebastian Stan. Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically alter his appearance, only to find his dream role slipping away and becomes consumed by reclaiming what was lost. Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson round out the cast.

The indie darling had a successful theatrical run in September, preparing audiences for its larger recognition on the awards circuit.

A24 had a truly stellar evening, as its powerful prison drama "Sing Sing" dominated the acting categories. Colman Domingo, delivering a heart-wrenching performance, won Outstanding Lead Performer, while Clarence Maclin earned the Supporting Performer award. Earlier in the ceremony, "Sing Sing" received the Gotham’s Social Justice Tribute.

Another double win came from Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios’ "Nickel Boys." Director RaMell Ross, whose adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel deservedly took home the inaugural Best Director award. One of the film’s youthful leads, Brandon Wilson, was honored with the Breakthrough Performance honor.

Organized by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, this year’s Gothams showcased a contenders’ list full of heavy hitters. Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed Cannes Palme d’Or winner, "Natural History," entered the night with a leading four nominations, including Best Feature alongside A24’s "Babygirl" and "A Different Man," "Nickel Boys," and Amazon MGM’s "Challengers."

Last year, A24’s "Past Lives," which also swept the Gothams, went on to secure an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, solidifying the Gotham Awards’ reputation as a predictor of future Oscar success.

Honoring Creative Excellence

“A Different Man’s” victory adds an intriguing twist to this year’s awards race, while strong showings for “Sing Sing” and “Nickel Boys” demonstrate the power of uncompromising storytelling centered on vital social themes.

The Gotham Awards further celebrated outstanding film achievement. “No Other Land,” a vérité-style documentary chronicling the destruction faced by Palestinian villages during the Israel-Hamas war, received Best Documentary Feature. Sideshow and Janus’ narrative debut "All We Imagine as Light" secured the Best International Film award.

Azazel Jacobs’ script for the Netflix drama "His Three Daughters" won Best Screenplay, while director Vera Drew garnered the Breakthrough Director award for her unorthodox superhero romp "The People’s Joker."

In addition to the film awards, the Gothams recognized esteemed artists with tributes. These honorary distinctions included:

  • "Sing Sing" received the Ensemble Tribute.
  • Denis Villeneuve, the visionary director of "Dune: Part Two," was honored with the Director Tribute.
  • Franklin Leonard and the Black List were celebrated with the Anniversary Tribute.
  • Angelina Jolie, star of "Maria," received the Performer Tribute.
  • Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”) were recognized with the Visionary Tribute.
  • Programmer-favorite Zendaya, star of "Challengers," was awarded the Spotlight Tribute.

The complete list of winners will undoubtedly spark conversation and debate as the film awards season heats up.
