Carrot Cravings Leave Swedish Model With an Unusual Glow
Alingsås, Sweden – 21-year-old Vilda Ekestena’s love for carrots took an unexpected turn, turning into a real-life case of “you are what you eat”. Suffering from ADHD and seeking a way to focus while studying, Vilda discovered that munching on carrots helped her concentrate. What started as a helpful strategy quickly escalated into a daily ritual of consuming almost a kilogram of carrots.
“It was like a trick for studying,” Vilda explained. “Chewing helped me stay focused on reading and writing.”
While her grades might have benefited, the excessive carrot consumption led to a rather peculiar side effect: Vilda’s skin developed a distinct orange hue. Initially, she attributed it to her naturally fair complexion.
“Before that, I got red and sunburned quickly,” recalled Vilda.
However, the deepening orange tone raised eyebrows, particularly amongst medical professionals. Doctors were perplexed by her unusual condition.
"They were shocked when I walked in,” Vilda said.
Numerous tests, including X-rays, failed to pinpoint any underlying medical issues.
“Every time I visited the doctor, I got the same answer and feedback,” Vilda stated.
Finally, a doctor suggested checking her blood values. The results revealed an overabundance of beta-carotene, a pigment abundant in carrots.
“It turned out that I had an overproduction of beta-carotene," Vilda said. "I was eating so many carrots that my body couldn’t handle the amount. At worst, my whole body was orange, but mostly in my hands, feet, elbows, and knees.”
Luckily, Vilda’s intense carrot phase eventually subsided. Her skin tone no longer boasts a full-on orange glow, though lingering orange hues persist on her hands and feet.
“If I go a while without any carrots, it goes away,” she noted. “But if I eat carrots one evening, I can wake up the next morning with orange skin again.”
Vilda’s unusual color has had professional repercussions too. As a model, she’s been turned down for jobs due to her distinctive skin tone, with some assuming tan lines or self-tanning gone awry.
"There was a campaign I was involved in,” Vilda shared. “They said they liked me, but I didn’t get the job because the pictures had to be taken with the product in my hands, and my hands were way too orange."
She now
takes a cautious approach to carrot consumption before modeling shoots.
“Now I don’t eat carrots for a long time before modeling work,” Vilda said with a laugh.
Despite the wrinkles in her career path, Vilda maintains a positive outlook.
While carrots may not be the best beauty regimen, they do offer a surprising benefit – sun protection. Vilda notes she developed a degree of sun tolerance during her carrot-heavy days.
