In northern China, at least 21 people were killed in a 100-kilometer running race. The participants of the ultramarathon in a rugged nature reserve with mountains and deep gorges were overcome by strong wind, hail and sleet. A total of 172 people took part in the race. 151 of them are safe, authorities say.
Saturday morning the race started in Jingtai at the Yellow River Stone Forest. The participants often started in T-shirts and shorts. The sky was cloudy. Around noon it suddenly became icy cold, with winter precipitation.
The race was stopped at 1 p.m. local time. A day later, the bodies of 21 missing runners were found. Eight participants were treated for minor injuries.
Drones met hittecamera’s
The local government had sent 1,200 rescue workers. They were equipped with drones with heat cameras and demolition equipment, among other things. Their work was hampered by a landslide caused by the extreme weather, the cold and the rugged terrain.
The disaster has sparked strong criticism of the local government, including on Chinese social media. “Why didn’t they look at the weather forecast and weigh the risks?”
At a press catch-up session, local officials bowed, expressed regret and declared themselves responsible. An investigation is being opened into the state of affairs.
