From March 8 to 17, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, the twentieth edition of the Ibero-American Theater Festival Cumbre de las Américas 2024 will take place, under the motto Women Who Count.

This event brings together theater groups from different parts of the world that submitted to the open call through a competition.

Juan Lacaze’s Rodó Library Theater group will perform the work Me in Laurenciaby Federico Roca, on Sunday the 10th at 9:00 p.m., in the Payró room of the Auditorium Theater in the city of Mar del Plata.

Directed by Andrés Leal, with the assistance of Ruben Cortizo, the play stars María Rosa Madera and Martín Cabrera.

In dialogue with the dailyLeal highlighted that the edition of the festival is dedicated “to the theme of women in theater or through it,” which is why this work “fits like a glove because it specifically talks about the topic.”

In that sense, Leal pointed out that the piece written by Roca is “almost a monologue performed by María Rosa [Madera]who plays an actress who is trying to put on the play Fuenteovejuna, and takes Laurencia’s monologue as an essay section.” From “this dismantling” of Lope de Vega’s work, “another situation arises” in which “the public begins to see a lot of things, which implies that the analysis will be a little deeper.”

Leal expressed that “we are very happy and busy, because these types of festivals demand a greater degree of attention from you, given that it is the first experience that the international outing group has had.” “We are happy, it is the result of the work and growth that the group has had in recent years,” he said.

Merits and recognitions

Several of the works performed by the Biblioteca Rodó Theater Group in the last three years have been recognized with the Florencio awards granted by the Association of Critics of Uruguay. In 2021, the work Small Infidelities won the award for best interior theater show in Montevideo. In 2022, the award went to him Instructions for hugging the airand in 2023 Globo won the award for best show and direction.

Leal highlighted “the growth” that the group has had, where “we try to create a heterogeneous team and that the theme, technique and staging are varied and of quality.”

Regarding the bond that this theater company has established with the public, Leal explained that “we try to make the proposals diverse so that the spectator is also diverse.”

In that sense, Leal said that “we have analyzed what type of theater we like to do,” and “we understand that it is one that deserves reflection as soon as the play ends, that offers a cathartic possibility,” so that “when you enter the room You do it one way and when you leave you leave another way, reflecting and thinking about what you experienced and felt within that place.”
